Service Center News of the Endeck line, according to EMS. The company says it plans to grow and expand Endeck's product lines. Jefferson Metals Warns of 'Check Washing' Service center executive R.W. McCarthy of Jefferson Metals, Wil- lowbrook, Ill., reported a recent case of "check washing" that created head- aches for his business. During the fourth quarter, his company was no- tified by a source that a check it had written had not been received, though the check had been mailed more than a month earlier. Upon notification, Jefferson con- tacted its bank to stop payment, at which point the bank notified the com- pany that the check had already been paid. Investigations discovered the check had been intercepted somewhere between the sending and receiving post offices, where it was "washed" – the process of removing the payee and check amount, then adding a new payee and amount to the check. It was deposited in California and the bank paid on the check. Though the company will be made whole on the funds, it must wait up to six months before the money is re- turned to its account, McCarthy says. "It seems that this crime is quite prevalent throughout our country and our bank has set us up with a review program to help prevent this from hap- pening a second time. This program is called 'positive pay with PE match,'" advises R.W. McCarthy, CEO of Jef- ferson Metals. "I urge all of you to review your checking policy and in- stitute whatever it may take to prevent this from happening to your company."
